February 2018

Exciting things are happening at CTHS this month.  February is CTE month and we are celebrating all of our career and technical education pathways.  Many of our pathways are participating in formal competitions this month where our students will have the opportunity to challenge themselves and demonstrate their outstanding skills and talents.  Criminal justice, audio/video production, welding, cosmetology, electrical, auto technology, auto collision, computer maintenance, and construction are all participating in the Skills USA competition, while culinary arts is participating in the FCCLA competition in Galveston.  We look forward to great results from all of our competitive teams and the opportunity to advance students to state competitions later this spring.

February is also a special month because the week of February 5-9 is National Counselors’ Week.  We have outstanding counselors and support staff in our counseling center.  They are caring, compassionate and highly skilled in serving and meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of students and families while preparing them for their next level of success.  We celebrate our counselors at CTHS!

We are also excited that our new sixteen-classroom addition is open to students and staff.  Mathematics, AVID, and Connect classes are all meeting in these new rooms with new technology.  We are very grateful to our community and our school Board for the support and funding for these new classrooms.  Our World Languages classes will now have classrooms, along with several floating teachers in the English and Social Studies departments.

Notification letters for next year will be sent later this month to our eighth grade applicants. Letters will be delivered to the intermediate campuses for distribution to students early next week.  We had over one thousand applicants for the available four hundred seats in the incoming freshman class of 2018.  Interest continues to remain high for the pathways, programs, and opportunities offered at CTHS.

As Valentine’s Day comes this month, we will be conducting a campus food day on February 14, along with carnation sales, chocolate dipped strawberries, and our World’s Famous chocolate-covered almond fundraiser.  If you have a sweet tooth, please support our students and programs by making a purchase from one of these outstanding programs.

Our College Now program continues to provide unique opportunities for students.  This month we will be hosting a San Jacinto College Fair to highlight programs and pathways available for students at San Jacinto College along with a Houston Area Recruiting Network College Fair with representatives from major colleges and universities across Texas and the nation.

At the end of this month, representatives from the Herff Jones Corporation will be on campus for seniors and their parents to place graduation cap, gown, and invitation orders.  On February 28 and March 1, representatives will be here to assist students and parents with these important decisions.

We are busily preparing students for the spring STAAR assessments in English, Biology, Algebra, and U.S. History.  It is indeed a busy month at CTHS.  Thank you for your continued support of our campus!
