April 2018

April is another very busy and exciting month at CTHS!  Over eighty CTHS students and many of our CTE pathway instructors travel to Corpus Christi on April 5-8 to represent our campus in the state SkillsUSA competition.  We look forward to great competition and winning results from our students and teams.  Our FCCLA Culinary teams and students will be traveling to Dallas April 4-7 to compete in the state FCCLA competition.  We know they will represent CTHS with pride and passion and we look forward to great results from them.  Our Team 231 High Voltage Robotics team will be competing at San Jacinto College in the regional competition on April 5-7 and we know they are charged up and ready to win.  We look forward to celebrating their success as well.

As required by the Texas Education Agency, we will be administering the STAAR English Language Arts examinations to our ninth grade students on Tuesday, April 10 and our tenth grade students on Thursday, April 12.  Successful completion of these exams is required for graduation and we know that our teachers have prepared our students this entire school year for success on these exams.  We appreciate your support in making sure students have plenty of rest and are ready for demonstrating their knowledge on these exams.

On April 17-19, we will be administering the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) assessment to our students who are registering for dual credit courses next year.  As required by the state, a student must demonstrate readiness to enroll in college courses by successful completion of English and Mathematics examinations.  Successful completion of the TSI will meet this requirement.

On Thursday, April 19, we will be hosting a breakfast prepared and served by our culinary and hospitality students to recognize and thank our business partners.  We are blessed to have outstanding business partners who sponsor and support our CTE pathways and we want to recognize them for their contributions and support.

On Saturday, April 21, our Senior Class of 2018 will host their Senior Prom at CTHS from 7:00-11:30 p.m.  The lobby and conference center will transform into a beautiful ballroom and our seniors and staff will gather to enjoy an evening of elegance and celebration.  We look forward to a wonderful time as the seniors make memories and enjoy an evening to remember.

We are proud to announce the CTHS Teacher of the Year and New Teacher of the Year winners.  AP Physics/Forensic Science teacher David Chandler is the 2018 Teacher of the Year and Connect Biology teacher Jose Alvarez is the 2018 New Teacher of the Year based on nominations from their teaching peers.  Both of them will represent CTHS in the district Teacher of the Year and New Teacher of the Year competitions and will be recognized at a district luncheon at CTHS later this spring.

April 9-13 is also National Library Week and we are so proud of our librarians, Amy Whalen and Jennifer Brabston.  Both of them are outstanding library research specialists who work to encourage and support all of our students and staff.  Thank you for your continued support of all that we do at CTHS!
