April 2019

April is another exciting and busy month at CTHS. Over ninety students along with their career and technical pathway teachers are traveling to Corpus Christi the first weekend of April to compete in the Skills USA state competition. This is the largest CTHS’ group to qualify for the state competitions and we look forward to outstanding results from the projects, examinations, and skills competitions. Our Team 231 High Voltage Robotics team is also participating in state competition the first weekend of April in Austin. This outstanding group of students is competing for an opportunity to advance to the world robotics championships and we look forward to exciting results from them.

The first week of April also marks the end of the fifth six week grading cycle. Teachers will be completing their grades and students will be receiving their report cards on Friday, April 12.

During the second week of April, we will be administering the state required STAAR examinations. On Tuesday, April 9, we will administer the STAAR ELA exam to our ninth grade students and on Thursday, April 11, we will administer the STAAR ELA exam to our tenth grade students. Successful completion of both of these exams is required for graduation. Our English teachers have been providing extra tutorials and support to ensure our students complete these examinations successfully.

The week of April 8-12 is National Library week and we want to recognize the special efforts of our librarians Mrs. Whalen and Mrs. Brabston. They make literacy a priority and instill the joy of reading into our students and staff. They also coach our Name That Book team and they are competing in the district completion on Thursday, April 4. We look forward to great results from them as well!

The third week of April begins the state required Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA) examination for our juniors and seniors. This examination focuses on the mathematics, reading and writing readiness of students for success in college. Some of our students have already demonstrated readiness in one or more of these areas based on their scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Those students will only take the sections of the TSIA in which they have not previously demonstrated readiness.

Our district will observe the Easter holidays on Good Friday, April 19 and students will have a holiday on Monday, April 22, while teachers are involved in staff development and planning sessions.

On Saturday, April 27, our senior class will host the 2019 Senior Prom at CTHS. Prom will begin at 7 pm and last until 11:30 pm. This is always an exciting evening for our seniors and our campus!

Eight weeks remain until the end of the school year. We have many important assessments and events planned and we appreciate all of your continued support and encouragement for your students to be in attendance each day, give their very best, and remain committed to working diligently in both their academic and pathway courses.
