January 2018

I hope each of you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year holiday with your family and friends!  It is great to be back at CTHS and we are looking forward to a wonderful spring semester.

Students return on Tuesday, January 9 and will report directly to homeroom to receive their second semester schedules.  First semester report cards will be sent home with students on Wednesday, January 10.

We have a unique opportunity for our seniors to receive their meningitis vaccinations at a greatly reduced cost on Friday, January 12.  This vaccine is required for all students who will be living in a dormitory or college campus housing.  If your student is interested, please contact our campus nurse, Kathy Ashworth, for additional information.

The construction on our new classroom additions continues to progress.  We anticipate moving teachers and students into those sixteen new classrooms later this month.

Many of our senior maritime, culinary arts, criminal justice, cosmetology, and child guidance students and instructors will be departing this coming Saturday for a five-day cruise from Galveston.  Students and instructors will be job shadowing aboard the Carnival Valor and gaining valuable experiences in their specific areas of certification.

Students will have a holiday on Monday, January 15 while our staff members participate in district-wide staff development sessions.  Students will return on Tuesday, January 16 for a regular school schedule.  We will also begin our extended day tutorials and programs on Wednesday afternoon, January 17.

On Tuesday, January 23, high school students across our district will participate in mock examinations for upcoming state and advanced placement testing.  Ninth and tenth grade students will participate in mock STAAR English exams, while eleventh and twelfth grade students will take mock Advanced Placement English literature or language exams.  Data from these exams will assist our teachers in providing specific, targeted interventions to prepare students for these important exams coming later this spring.

On Thursday, January 25, we will host our annual National Honor Society induction ceremony at 6:00 pm in our lobby.  Students who have met the academic standards and applied for membership into the Honor Society will be inducted.  We hope you will plan to attend and join us for this special evening.

On Tuesday, January 30, we will host a mandatory student and parent meeting for any students interested in and registered for dual credit courses next year.  Representatives from San Jacinto College along with our own counseling team will be present at 6:00 pm in our dining hall to explain the program and answer any questions related to the coursework, grading, and other issues.

On Wednesday afternoon, January 31, San Jacinto College representatives will also be on our campus from 3:00-4:30 pm to assist students with scholarship opportunities at SJC.  Please encourage your student to attend and participate if they are planning to attend SJC upon graduation.

It will be a busy month at CTHS and we look forward to seeing you.  Thank you for the privilege of working with your students every day!
